As demand for organics grows, Rodale Institute looks to expand

KUTZTOWN, PA – Rodale Institute, known worldwide for its organic research and education, is planning to expand, creating satellite centers across the nation. These “Regional Resource Centers” will help more farmers transition to organic operations.

Rodale InstituteRealizing not everyone has the opportunity or the means to physically visit the 333-acre experimental farm in Kutztown, Rodale Institute aims to create “mini-Rodale Institutes.” Establishment of these centers can be even more useful than online presentations and webinars, creating a greater impact with farmers during the transition process.

Boulder, Colorado, Memphis, Tennessee, eastern Michigan, and northern Montana are being looked at for the initial centers. These Regional Resource Centers are intended for regions of the country that have different climates and crops than here in the Northeast. The goal is open these centers by the end of this year.

Recent reports show that the consumer demand for organic food and beverages has has greatly increased. The US organic industry, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), saw its largest dollar gain in 2015, adding $4.2 billion in sales.

Manufacturers are having difficulties finding enough farms to supply organic ingredients. Rodale Institute is determined to change that market scenario. The ultimate goal in establishing of Rodale Regional Resource Centers will be to successfully transition farmers organic and to provide needed resources for farmers who are already organic.

Minty Congestion Rub

As a child I loved Vick’s Vapor Rub. I know – weird, right! I found I can make a similar rub using natural products and of course essential oils!

Prep time: minimal

Coconut OilIngredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil (I prefer Nature’s Promise, seen at right)
  • 7 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 7 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

The Coconut Oil should be more liquid than solid. Once manageable, add in the essential oils and mix. You can either make the mixture in a bowl and pour into a container or mix the oils directly into the Coconut Oil.

To Use:

Simply rub the salve on your chest to relieve your congestion. I normally do this twice a day – before bed and in the morning.

Note:

This should not be used on young children. This recipe should be used for adolescents and adults.

Wounded Warrior Project Hosts Essential Oils Event

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Veterans and their family members were given the opportunity to explore the benefits of essential oils during a recent Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) program. Participants were able to make their own creations using a variety of ingredients.

essential-oils-medical-flowers-herbs-herb-46629883Essential oils can be used for numerous purposes, from detoxifying the air and all-purpose cleaning to reducing stress and anxiety. Each participant made their own custom room spray and sugar scrub. They also learned about different essential oils, their popular uses, and the positive effects they can have on injured veterans.

“This particular event caught my attention because I’m quite fond of oils, especially since my two children suffer from seasonal eczema,” said Army veteran and Army spouse Ingrid Mateo. “Making the scrub and room spray from scratch was a really neat and fun learning experience.”

“I noticed something very interesting during this gathering,” she continued. “In spite of the fact that it was mostly spouses, we all wanted to create scrubs and room spray scents that would be accommodating to our veterans at home. It just further proved that even when we are doing something for ourselves, we are still a team – one with our warriors.”

Logo WWPDuring program event activities, WWP staff closely interact with attendees and advise them of additional services that can assist their recovery. Generous donors make it possible for wounded veterans to participate in a variety of activities that empower them to take control of their lives, and these programs and services are offered free of charge, for a lifetime.

WWP is a national, nonpartisan organization headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. To get involved and learn more, visit woundedwarriorproject.org.

Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner

No one likes to clean, especially the bathroom, but here is one recipe to help make that task a bit more bearable!

Prep time: minimal

Ingredients:

  • baking soda
  • white vinegar
  • disinfecting essential oil blend

Blend combinations are really of your choosing. You could mix lavender, lemongrass, rosemary and tea tree oils. Another combination might be eucalyptus, grapefruit, lime, lemon and lemongrass. I personally am choosing eucalyptus, lemon, and tea tree oils today.

Directions:

  • Place 1 cup of baking soda in a glass bowl.
  • Add 50 drops of the essential oil blend into the baking soda.
  • Blend the oils into the baking soda using a wooden spoon or a pestle.

scrubbing-hand-376307To Use:

  • Put 2 TBSP of the mix into your toilet bowl.
  • Pour 2 TBSP of white vinegar on top of it. It will fizz and foam as they combine.
  • Scrub the toliet with your cleaning brush, as you normally would.

Leftover mix:

  • Store leftover mix in a glass jar to save for next time.

Note:

I came across this recipe awhile ago on Growing Up Herbal by Megan Visser and adapted it a bit. It is simple, adaptable and works!

Plant now for Fall crops

By Jeanne Ruczhak-Eckman

cherry-tomato-plant-146147There is a time to plant and a time to harvest. Mid to late July is a time to plant if you are looking for fall crops. Now is the perfect time to plant eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes.

The Farmers’ Almanac points out that it is a good time to plant fall crops which will bear aboveground. In other words, plant veggies that grow above the ground. The Almanac also notes it is a good time to sow those forage crops as well as any grains.

Both tomatoes and peppers require six to eight hours of sunlight. When planting, loosed the soil and mix your soil with compost or peat moss. Also consider using a fertilizer like Espoma’s Tomato Tone to help nourish your tomatoes and field against diseases specific to tomatoes. The Tomato Tone can be used now as part of the soil preparation and again as a fertilizer.

Happy gardening!
